William “Bill” Nelson, a beloved father, grandfather, and proud veteran, passed away on March 21, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born on February 12, 1945, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, Bill was the son of the late Curtis and Gwyneth (Jensen) Nelson. He graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1963 and served his country in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt). His military service took him around the globe, but he always longed to return to his roots in Minnesota.
After retiring from the Air Force, Bill settled back in Albert Lea. He took immense pride in his two sons, Kirk and Yanus, and his five grandchildren. His passion for automobiles was evident in his love for muscle cars, particularly Fords. In his later years, Bill enjoyed collecting model cars, allowing him to showcase his enthusiasm for cars in a new way.
Upon his return to Albert Lea, Bill became a familiar face at many local restaurants, where his warm spirit and commitment to those around him earned him the admiration and affection of all who met him.
Bill is survived by his sons, Kirk (and wife Vicky) and their four children: Heather (and husband Brandon DeJong), Amanda, Dylan, and Josie, along with his great-granddaughter, Evelyn DeJong; and Yanus (and wife Seanna) and their son Joshua. He is also survived by his two sisters, Sharon Seidel and Jolene Engelby, as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Gwyneth Nelson; his brothers, Dale and Jon Nelson; and his sister, Nancy Sargent.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Hayward Cemetery, followed by a luncheon from 1:30-3:30 PM at Bonnerup Funeral & Cremation Services in Albert Lea.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250.
