Wayne Edward Hendrickson, age 75, passed away on June 1, 2026, in Austin, MN, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on January 2, 1951, at Naeve Hospital, in Albert Lea, MN, to Edward and Joyce (Hallum) Hendrickson. Wayne was baptized and confirmed in Hartland Evangelical Church. He then joined West Freeborn Lutheran Church where he had various positions. He served on the Freeborn School Board during a troubled time for small schools. Wayne graduated from Freeborn High School before attending Bemidji State University for one year, where he played football and developed a lifelong appreciation for the North Woods. He transferred to Winona State University for another year before returning to Albert Lea.
Wayne began his career at Red Owl warehouse and later worked for the Freeborn County Co-Op. He ultimately found his calling in the trucking industry, spending nearly 30 years with Dave Syverson where he sold heavy trucks until his retirement.
On April 8, 1972, Wayne married the love of his life, Nannette Johnson. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and lasting memories. Wayne enjoyed sports, fishing with family and friends, and was a devoted supporter of his children and grandchildren, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer them on from the sidelines – often with a little suggestion or two along the way. One of his greatest joys was organizing the family’s annual trip to Kauai, a tradition he eagerly anticipated each year.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nannette Hendrickson; his children Amy (Kory) Newman, Matthew (Jennifer) Hendrickson, and Brent Hendrickson; and his cherished grandchildren Alexa, Ashley, Alyvia Newman, Madison and Preston Hendrickson, and Hope and Jacob Hendrickson. He is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Nolan and Kathy Schrader; his brother, Larry (Rita) Hendrickson; brothers-in-law, Dean Lindquist and Mark (Gail) Johnson; sisters-in-law, Candace Sorensen and Candy Johnson; along with many treasured nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Joyce Hendrickson; his in-laws; his beloved granddaughter, Karissa Joy Hendrickson; his sister Joan Lindquist; brothers-in-law, Butch Nolan, Jim Schrader, Steve Sorensen, and Neil Johnson.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Bonnerup Funeral & Cremation Services, in Albert Lea. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at 11:00 am at West Freeborn Lutheran Church Hartland, with a visitation beginning at 10:00AM. Burial will be held at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to West Freeborn Cemetery Fund or Mayo Hospice, whose compassionate care and support brought comfort to Wayne and his family.
Though he will be deeply missed, the love, traditions, and memories he created will continue to be treasured for generations to come. Blessed be Wayne’s memory.
