Thomas Thompson

Thomas Walton Thompson, age 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, following a stroke. He was surrounded by his loving daughters, Mary, Ann, and Jeanne.

Thomas was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and later made his home in the Twin Cities area, where he lived with his beloved wife of 46 years, JoAnn Mavis Thompson (née Evenson). Together, they built a life upon the foundations of love, family, and sharing experiences.

After retiring, Thomas and JoAnn enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. Their grandchildren brought them immense joy and were a constant source of both pride and conversation. The couple spent many winters in Arizona before making Mesa their permanent home in 2014. Thomas will be remembered for his sometimes-mischievous sense of humor—always ready with a playful remark or clever quip. He will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family and the wisdom he generously shared. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his lessons will live on through many.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Thompson; parents, Joseph & Frances Thompson; and sisters, Catherine Maas and Margaret Tennis. He is survived by daughter Mary Zetterlund and her husband, Kris; daughter Ann Thompson; daughter Jeanne Strange and her husband, Mike; grandchildren Callie Keeney and her husband, Michael Wysocki; Erik Zetterlund; Cody Strange and his wife, Carissa; Zoey Keeney; and Kyle Zetterlund. He is also survived by brother-in-law Steve Tennis, nephews Doug Maas, David Maas, and Michael Tennis; nieces Katie Maas and Karen Tennis, and great-nephew Michael Hall.

A service will be held for Thomas at Bonnerup Funeral & Cremation Services, 2210 E. Main St., Albert Lea, MN, 56007, on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 10:00 am, followed by coffee and light refreshments at the funeral home. Interment will follow at East Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery, 23758 785th Ave., Albert Lea, MN, 56007.
