Sandra Jean Stephenson was born January 11, 1958 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Sandy fought fiercely against cancer, losing her battle on October 8, 2025 passing peacefully at home.
Being of a military family, she lived in Germany, Texas, Massachusetts, and finally landed in Albert Lea, Minnesota in 1971. Sandy attended Winona State University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology/Corrections. She later continued her education at Mankato State University and achieved her Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She worked across southern Minnesota in various mental health services and positions, advocating for those that needed a voice.
Sandy lived and loved fiercely. She was a passionate advocate for animals and nature and especially for her beloved dogs, Isabell and Charley.
She is survived by her spouse, Katherine Kary of 37 years; sisters, Cynthia Powell, Gina (Shawn) Mitchell; nieces, Sarah (Brian) Busse, Claire Mitchell and fiancé, Alex Sill; great niece and nephew, Zoe Rebekah and Jackson Charles Busse.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rebecca and Charles Stephenson.
Memorials in Sandy's name can be sent to the Freeborn County Humane Society or to Ascension Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minnesota.
