Melvin Dennis Olson, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by love and family on February 13, 2026.
Melvin was born on November 6, 1947, in Albert Lea, to Clarence Olson Sr. and Ruby (Judd) Olson. Melvin attended Albert Lea High School, and remained a local fixture throughout his life. On January 20, 1967, Melvin married LouAnn Hallum, with whom he raised their three children. Melvin dedicated over 40 years of his career as a freight mover with several food producers, including Wilson and Farmstead, showcasing an exemplary work ethic that reflected his hardworking spirit. He was well known for his warmth, generosity, and humility, possessing the "biggest, kindest heart." His ability to make everyone feel welcome was one of his most treasured qualities, and he took great pleasure in talking to anyone he met. His love for animals, particularly dogs, exemplified his gentle nature and compassionate heart.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories through his surviving family. He is survived by his children, Tammy (Dan) Johnson, Michelle McClish, and Mike (Steph) Olson; his grandchildren Nathan (Tayler) Johnson, Spencer (Alexis) Johnson, Jared McClish, Jacob McClish, Jessica (Cole) Baldwin, Alexa McCune (Caleb Snater), Maycee Rider, Gage Rider, Caleb (Sarah Heggestad) Banks, and Colby Banks, and his cherished thirteen great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law Diane Olson, close friend Wayne Hedtlen, who has done so much for all of the Olson family, and many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members.
Melvin was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Olson Sr. and Ruby Olson, along with his siblings Hans (Ardella) Olson, Frederick Olson, Clarence Olson Jr and Russell Olson; as well as his siblings lost in infancy Genevieve Olson, Clarence Olson Jr and Harold Olson; his nephew Roger Olson; and close friends Dave (Georgia) Godtland.
A visitation will be held on February 24, 2026, beginning at 10 AM followed by a memorial service at 11 AM at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, 2210 East Main Street Albert Lea, 56007. Services will be officiated by Chaplain Wendy Browne.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Croix Hospice and Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea for their care and assistance throughout Melvin's final journey. His memory will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
