Martha ‘Mandi’ Berry Vermedahl passed away unexpectedly at her home in Eden Prairie, Minnesota on August 28, 2026. In the memories Martha leaves behind through her travels, her music, and her friendships formed across miles and years, her life will be remembered with deep affection.
Martha was born on May 9, 1961 to Claire and Ruth (Berry) Vermedahl in Albert Lea. She graduated from Albert Lea High School, then studied for two years at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, followed by two and a half years at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida. She earned two music degrees, studying singing and opera, as well as piano and clarinet. Her early life was filled with love and passion, leading her to live a life marked by curiosity, warmth, and a deep love of the wider world, embracing life with creativity, excitement and grace.
She devoted forty-one years to a remarkable career as a flight attendant. Over the course of those decades, she flew with Republic Airlines, which became Northwest Airlines that later merged into Delta Airlines. She loved that her work allowed her to see the world, and she carried home many wonderful stories of the places she visited and the passengers she met along the way. On frequent flights to London and Dublin, she even came to know some of the regular travelers.
Travel was not simply her profession; it was one of Martha’s great joys. She journeyed all over the world, with San Francisco, London, and Dublin among her favorite destinations, while also visiting Copenhagen, Hawaii, Rome, Tokyo, and Australia. She made a tradition of taking yearly birthday trips to San Francisco, and wherever she traveled, she delighted in visiting theaters to see plays. She loved discovering new places, trying new foods, making friends wherever life took her, and gathering the kinds of experiences that made her life so bright.
Martha is survived by her mother, Ruth Vermedahl; her brother Ross (Marcia) Vermedahl; her niece and nephews Joanna (Scott) Theisen, John (Rachel) Vermedahl, Jack (Isabella) Vermedahl; a great niece and nephew Harlow Theisen and Tate Vermedahl; and many extended family members and close friends. She was preceded in death by her father Claire Vermedahl.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, beginning at 10 AM at United Methodist Church, 702 US-69, Albert Lea, MN 56007. A memorial service will follow there at 11 AM.
