Louise Janelle (Thompson) Berg, 88, of Mason City, IA passed away peacefully on June 22, 2023 with her loving family by her side.
Louise was born on December 16, 1934 on the family farm near Ellendale, MN to Orlando and Bernice (Ohnstad) Thompson; the oldest of 4 children and a true farmgirl. She attended Ellendale-Geneva Schools, where she was crowned as the Homecoming Queen her senior year; graduating in 1952. She married her high school sweetheart, Allan Berg on August 31, 1952 at First Lutheran Church in Ellendale, MN. Together they moved to Albert Lea, MN where they continued their life and raised 3 children; Debra, David, and DeAnne. She was proud of her role as Mom and being home to care for her family while her children were young. As they grew older Louise worked at the orthodontics office as a receptionist and later at Wal-mart.
As a young girl she learned to play piano and continued to enjoy music throughout her life; also playing the clarinet and accordion. With a love for music of all kinds she especially enjoyed attending local parades to hear the variety of bands. Louise loved to spend time with her family playing Cribbage, 500, BINGO, or dice games. Fridays were often reserved for a day trip with her daughters to the casino or other outings to go thrift shopping; always finding treasures for everyone else. Alongside her son, she assisted him with remodeling homes in the Albert Lea area. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she was their biggest cheerleader as she watched them play sports. Her flare for style always left room for compliments on how well dressed she was. With a love for anything sweet, Louise’s favorite treats were popcorn and fudge; Louise could never have enough and a bowl of the sweet treats were always within her reach.
Louise’s kind and generous heart will be missed by all those who loved her.
Left to cherish here memory are her children; Debra (Rick) Riemann, David (DeAnn) Berg, and DeAnne (Dale) Maroo; grandchildren, Stephanie (Michael) Spaeth, Allison Terriquez, Nicholas Berg, Ryan Berg, Cali Berg, Haley Renner, Dani Renner, Megan (Corey) Ziegler, Spencer (Mackensie) Maroo, and Megan Maroo; great grandchildren, Antonio Riemann, Jaxen Schneider, Kaden Carlson, Tanner Carlson, Jase Carlson, and Dawson Maroo; sisters, Orlene (Jack) Woodside and Lois (Duane) Aitchison; brother, Ronald (Maxine) Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Allan in 2013; and grandchildren, Scott Riemann and Kim Riemann.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, MN; Vicar Ashley Kuhlman will officiate. Louise’s family will greet guests at a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at First Lutheran Cemetery in Ellendale, MN.
