James Gordon Blake, age 68, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026.
He was born in Albert Lea, MN to Gordon and Lola (Ryan) Blake on May 24, 1957. Jim, or Jimmy, graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1975, and attended St. Cloud State University before moving to Waseca to manage Waseca Bowlers World and Playmate Lounge. After the family sold the business, Jim ventured into food management.
In 1990, Jim and his former wife Julie Kramer purchased Thompson’s Boathouse in Waseca. Jim started the Annual Ice Golf Tournament that took place on Clear Lake. Businesses would sponsor holes to raise money towards the American Diabetes Association. An event that would fill up quick with golfers every year and became a tradition for many years.
In 2006, Jim sold Thompsons Boathouse. A year after selling, Jim purchased a vacant, fire-damaged building that used to be called Jerry’s Inn. He spent 11 months fully renovating the shell of the building before launching what would be called, The Willows Restaurant and Lounge where he brought his son Travis Blake on board as the initial manager. You could find Jim sitting at the bar with a cup of coffee and a crossword puzzle. Travis and Heather officially purchased the family business in 2016, and Jim continued to work and help out when needed.
Outside of work Jim was an avid golfer, a fan of his favorite sports teams and loved his casino trips, especially sports gambling. His dogs were his constant companions and brought him great joy. Jim might have been a man of few words, but he was quick witted, a “wise guy” and full of knowledge. Jim was proud of his kids and grandkids.
Jim is survived by his daughter Kristi of St. Cloud, son Travis (Heather) Blake of Waseca, grandkids Kylie, Addison, Landon and Tenley Jo, along with his sister Bonnie (Tom) Kennedy and nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Gordy and Lola.
A celebration of life will be hosted by the family at the Waseca American Legion, 700 State St S, Waseca, MN 56093, on Friday, May 29th from 4:00-7:00PM.
