Gregory Charles Morfitt, age 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea, MN, entering into a timeless rest after a life rich in adventure, service, and love. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea on Tuesday, August 25. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, August 24, at Bonnerup Funeral Service and Cremation and for one hour prior to service on Tuesday.
Greg was born on June 22, 1949, in Worthington, MN, born to Bonnie (White) and Derald Morfitt. Alongside his siblings, Wayne and Nancy, he grew up in Albert Lea, where the family established their roots and made their home. A proud graduate of the Albert Lea High School Class of 1967, Greg went on to continue his education at Austin Junior College before answering the call to serve his country.
In 1969, Greg enlisted in the United States Army. From 1970 to 1971, he navigated the challenging jungles of Vietnam. His bravery and dedication during this period earned him several military decorations, most notably the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and two Army Commendation Medals. Upon returning home, Greg chose to follow his heart into the quiet sanctuary of the wilderness, heading north to the Gunflint Trail to share his deep love for nature as a tour guide.
Eventually returning to Albert Lea, Greg met and married his first love, Barbara Bagaason. Together, they welcomed four daughters: Becci, Alison, Amanda, and Sadie. Greg took immense pride in his girls. Though he had no sons of his own, his trademark sense of humor shone through whenever he joked that he raised four daughters just so he could finally gain some sons-in-law.
A man of varied talents and forward-thinking curiosity, Greg became captivated by the newly evolving computer industry in the 1980s. He stepped away from the family business, Floorcrafters, to establish his own venture, C&M Computers. His expertise later led him to instruct at Riverland Community College, where he took great satisfaction in helping small businesses transition into the digital age. He eventually returned to Floorcrafters, working side-by-side with his brother until retirement.
Community, brotherhood, and honoring his fellow veterans were central to Greg’s character. He served with pride as a Mason for the Masonic Lodge and as an Osman Shriner. Many will remember Greg driving those iconic little red cars in local parades, or working to organize and serve pancake breakfasts.
Greg loved fishing, swimming, scuba diving, and rambling across the country in his camper to explore countless state parks. His favorite place to spend time was Myre-Big Island State Park. Armed with his camera, Greg documented his joy through thousands of photographs, capturing the change of the seasons, nesting Bald Eagles raising their eaglets, and the quiet movements of deer and other wildlife making their homes on the edge of town.
Above all, Greg’s greatest joy was his family. The unique bonds shared with his daughters, their spouses, and his grandchildren brought a sweet, unmatched warmth to his heart. In his later years, Greg found beautiful companionship with his partner, Carli Bailey. He took great peace in caring for her land, tending to the animals, and embracing her children as an integral part of his heart.
Greg’s legacy of kindness, laughter, and sharp wit will be carried forward by his surviving family: his daughters, Becci (Randy) Anderson and their children Makayla, Carly, and Blake; Alison (Garrett) Kassuelke and their children Trent and Anna; Amanda (Jeremiah) Forman and their children Grant (Chase) and Jackson; and Sadie (Ryan) Wuerflein and their children Olivia and Benjamin. He is also survived by his siblings, Wayne (Barb) Morfitt and Nancy Hudson; his partner, Carli Bailey, and her children Rachel Collier and Axel (Ashley) Boswell-Fyler and their son Bryson; as well as his nieces and nephews, Natalie (Teresa) Gerk-Parra, Melanie (Todd) Tarnow, Marc Morfitt, and their families.
In passing, Greg has been reunited with his parents and his beloved nephew, Matthew, who surely greeted him with open arms at Heaven's gate.
The family wishes to extend their deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to Greg’s exceptional care teams at St. Croix Hospice and on Station 4 at the Good Samaritan Society, and to family friend Sue Cory for the boundless comfort, dignity, and tender care they all provided Greg during his final months.
