Donald Eckart

December 18, 1946 — October 11, 2025

It is with a mix of sorrow and gratitude that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend: Donald “Donnie” David Eckart. Donnie left surrounded by family on Saturday, October 11, after a life rich with love and memories. Donnie’s heart was rooted deeply in his family. Born on December 18, 1946, to George Eckart and Anne Eckart (DeVries). One of eight children to George and Anne, Donnie loved his brothers and sisters. He was a devoted husband to his lifelong love Olene Eckart (Anderson), whom he married on March 31, 1971. He adored his children, LeAnn Lord, Zachary Eckart and Amy Birch, as well as his cherished grandchildren Jazzlynn Thompson, Hailey Birch, and Maya Eckart.

Donnie graduated from Albert Lea High School, and dedicated 36 years of his life working for the Albert Lea Utilities Department, where he was known for his strong work ethic and the friendly smiles he shared with colleagues and the community. He even found time to be a handy man around town with his brother Butch. The two of them helped many friends and family members throughout town over the years.

Donnie's love for life extended to outdoor adventures, camping trips, and evenings spent sitting by the fire with those he held dear. He loved the natural world, planting many trees on his farm and family home. He embraced every moment with an infectious laugh and a welcoming spirit that drew people in. Donnie was a passionate bowler, and made his mark in the bowling community. He achieved an impressive three perfect games and participated in 25 national tournaments, earning accolades that placed him in the Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He served as the bowling secretary for many years. When he wasn’t throwing strikes, you could find him swinging clubs on the golf course, tossing horseshoes, or honing his skills at the pool table. A dedicated sports fan, he cheered passionately for the Vikings and the Twins, relishing every moment spent with friends and family while watching the games.

Donald will be remembered by his wife, Olene Eckart; his children: LeAnn Lord, Zachary Eckart and Amy (Kevin) Birch; his grandchildren: Jazzlynn Thompson, Hailey Birch, and Maya Eckart; siblings: Shelly Knuths, Bob (Jan) Eckart, Bill (Deanna) Eckart, Roger (Linda) Eckart; and brother-in-law Brian Kniss. Each of them carries a piece of his spirit and the countless stories they shared together.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents George and Anne Eckart; siblings: Kathy (Warren) Madison, Butch (George) Eckart, and Rodney Eckart; brother-in-law Leroy Knuths; mother-in-law Lila Kniss; brothers-in-law Kurt Anderson and Mitchell Kniss; sister-in-law Genevieve Laite and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone for the love and support during this time. Please carry Donnie’s spirit in your hearts and continue to celebrate the wonderful moments we all shared with him.

Though we mourn his passing, we invite you to celebrate with us the incredible legacy Donnie leaves behind. A celebration of life will be held at The Events Center on Broadway, 201 South Broadway Avenue, Albert Lea, 56007 on Friday, October 17th from 11 AM to 2 PM. Please join us in honoring his life by gathering to share stories, laughter, and love in remembrance of a great man. In honor of celebrating his love of sports, the family has requested that guests wear a sports jersey or other sport related attire.
