Funeral services for Shirley A. Kenevan will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Reverends Mark Niethammer and Steve Sampson will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Shirley passed away at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, MN on March 20, 2015. She was 79 years old.
Shirley was born on February 18, 1936 in Albert Lea, MN to Charles and Altine (Eide) Dilling. She grew up in the house that her father built in Albert Lea, and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1954. She attended Luther College where she was in the college band, and later in 1956, she graduated from the Minnesota School of Laboratory and X-Ray Technology.
Shirley started her career as a secretary at Halverson Elementary School in Albert Lea, and worked there until 1978. Shortly after, she started working as a secretary for the Freeborn County Community Education Association. There, she received the Minnesota Community Education Association Community Contribution award in 1999. She moved to Circle Pines, MN in 2007 to be closer to her family.
Shirley was a member of East Freeborn Lutheran Church, where she and Richard were leaders for Luther League, and she also played the organ for church activities. When the family moved into town, Shirley became a member of Salem Lutheran Church where she also played the organ, was a part of the Circle Group, and led the Cherub Choir for a period of time. When she moved to Circle Pines, MN she became a member of the St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was active in Friendship Club, Quilting Club, and Bible Study.
In her free time, Shirley enjoyed following all Minnesota sports, particularly the MN Twins and Vikings. She liked to knit, and was very good at Hardanger embroidery. She was a very caring, friendly and kind person that was liked by everyone. Most of all, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; and parents, Charles and Altine Dilling.
Shirley is survived by her children, Katherine (Leroy) Ellingson, of Conyers, GA, and Charles, (Catherine) Kenevan, of Blaine, MN; grandchildren, Steven (Stephanie) Thompson, of Clemson, SC, Samuel Kenevan and Joseph Kenevan, both of Blaine, MN, and Adam Look, of Ham Lake, MN; as well as many extended family members and friends.
