Martha Flugum

Funeral services for Martha Flugum will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Reverend John Holt will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 – 6 PM on Friday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Martha Flugum passed away at the Lutheran Retirement Center in Northwood, IA on February 3, 2015. She was 101 years old.
Martha was born on January 7, 1914 to Knut and Anna (Solheim) Singelstad on a farm near Emmons, MN. She was also baptized at home. The family moved to Worth County in 1920, where she attended public and parochial school. At the age of 13, she was in choir and took piano lessons that same year. She was confirmed into the Lutheran Church by Reverend Hans Fosness. At the age of 16, she attended business training in St. Paul.
Martha was united in marriage to Charles Flugum on June 9, 1935 at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The service was led by Reverend Hans Fosness. Martha was active at First Lutheran. She taught Sunday School, was Chairman of Caring and Sharing, Circle 31, and was the Vice President of First Lutheran Church Women. She was also a 4-H Leader, Key Leader, the first secretary for Shady Oak Cemetery Auxiliary, was a part of the Audubon Society, and was a chairman for the Freeborn County Women's Farm Bureau. She attended all of her relatives' confirmations and graduations, and supported her college-age children financially and attended all of their special events.
Martha and Charles loved to travel. They visited all 50 states, Europe and connected with relatives in Norway. She was an avid collector of cookie cutters, and would often attend national cookie cutter conventions.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Cecil Maureen Johnson and Charlotte Stone; sons, Merlin Flugum and Alton Flugum; grandchildren, Quentin (Tonya) Johnson, Todd (Juli) Johnson, Erik Johnson, Kyle (Jenifer) Johnson, Lauren (Jason) Kennedy, and Robert Stone; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Alexandra Johnson, Nate and Karina Johnson, Haley and Makenzie Johnson, Noah and Jonah Johnson, Hannah, Samantha, and Brenna Kennedy; siblings, Helen DeLooper and Norma (James) Adams; a sister in-law, Kari Singelstad; as well as many other loving family and friends.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Knut (Anna) Singelstad; husband, Charles; brothers, Hans, Raymond (Oma), and Alfred; a sister, Bertha (Norman) Eide; a son in-law, Reverend Milton Johnson; and brothers in-law, Norman DeLooper and Curtis Amundson.
