Hulda Bauers

July 30, 1898 — August 11, 2005

The funeral service for Hulda Marie Steele Bauers will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 13, 2005 at the Concordia Lutheran Church, Pickerel Lake Township. The Reverend Wendy Anderson will officiate. Interment will be in the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 - 2:00 PM on Saturday before the service at the church.



Hulda Marie Steele Bauers was born July 30, 1898 in Alden Township, the oldest daughter of Karl (Charles) Mary (Schmidt) Steele. She was baptized by the Reverend William Ganschow of Wells, substituting for Rev. H.F. Pheiffer at Concordia Lutheran Church, Pickerel Lake Township on August 28, 1898. Her affirmation of Faith was on March 30, 1912 also at Concordia of which she was a lifelong member. She lived in three centuries.



She attended school district #40 until 8th grade when it was necessary to help at home due to the untimely death of her father in 1911. Always an avid reader and striving for more education she attended a winter quarter at University Farm, St. Paul Campus and one quarter of Albert Lea High School.



On March 10, 1920 she was united in marriage to Herman Bauers of the Conger area at Concordia Lutheran Church.

They farmed briefly in Albert Lea Township and in Pickerel Lake Township until Herman's death in 1972. She was a true help mate with farm chores and field work, first driving horses and then the John Deere tractor.



She was a devout Christian and was involved with her church, was on the altar Guild, member of the Mary Circle,WELCA, was on the Work Committee for many years and made many hand stitched quilt tops for the church?s Quilting Project.

She belonged to the Shady Oaks Mother's Club of District 56, helped with Pickerel Lake 4-H Club and the Alden Senior Citizens. She was always willing to offer a helping hand and offer a ride. She worked during World War II by being a War Bond Driver and for the Red Cross.

In 1925 Arthur Durrant from the Owatonna Orphanage came to live with the Bauers Family. She loved to read, braid rugs and hand stitch quilt tops. Her family was especially important and dear to her.

Hulda is survived by her daughter: Lauretta and husband, Manville Toenges; grandchildren: Gordon and Kathleen Toenges of Alden, MN, Myrna and James Scharpe of Arlington, MN, Laurie Magnus of Byron, MN; great grandchildren: Kari and Paul Wendt of Eyota, MN, Katie and Luke Nielsen of Albert Lea, MN, Kristine and Shane Christensen of Alden, MN, Matthew and Gwen Scharpe, Dan and Mollie Scharpe, Katelyn Scharpe, Peter Scharpe all of Arlington, MN, Rebecca Scharpe of Edina, MN, Jennifer Scharpe (Peace Corp) in Ecuador, Vanessa and Aaron Magnus of Byron, MN; 3 great great grandchildren: Kaylee and Paige Wendt and Caleb Scharpe; sister-in-law: Arvella Steele; nieces, nephews and cousins.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters and brothers-in-law: Magelina and Arthur Perschbacher, Irma and Nels Wangen; brother: Albert and Sister: Laura; foster son and daughter-in-law: Arthur and Elsie Durrant; brothers and sisters-in-law: Albert and Rose Bauers, Frank and Emma Becker, Bernard and Ella Bauers, Albert and Martha Tolzmann, Cy Skiff, Fred and Ruby Bauers, Ray and Louise White, William and Irene Bauers.

Memorials are preferred. Blessed be her memory.
