George Murphy

The Memorial Service for George Daniel Murphy will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, June 25, 2010 at St. Theodore Catholic Church, Albert Lea. Father James Berning and Deacon Mike Ellis will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour before service at the church. Interment will be in the St. Theodore Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by Albert Lea Veteran's Organizations. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, George D. Murphy left this earth June 22, 2010, to join his son, Paul Lawrence who preceded him to heaven 8 years ago. George also is preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, 4 brothers-in-law and 4 sisters-in-law. George leaves his best friend and wife of 56 years Margaret; daughters: Mary (Dan) Hughes, Ann (Mike) Kjos, Sharon (Wade) Bresnahan and son, David (Susan) Murphy; 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters: Marilyn (Clement) D'Amata, Vera Murphy, Katherine Scott, and Mary Jean De'Angelo; brothers: Paul (Charlene) and James of Connecticut and many nieces and nephews. George was born in New Haven, Connecticut on September 6, 1932 to George T. and Vera (Feminak) Murphy. He moved to Albert Lea, MN after serving for 3 years on the battleship USS Iowa during the Korean War. He was employed by the Engineering Dept of Freeborn County Highway Dept for 40 years. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Elks Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid golfer, proud of his hole in one. George was an active individual during his early years with bowling, softball and pool league. George was extremely proud of his grandchildren, Jennifer (Kevin) Phillips, Angela Murphy, Elizabeth Greene, Samuel Kjos, Maxwell Kjos, Abby Bresnahan, Jacob Murphy, Kristine Murphy, Zoe Bresnahan and 2 great grandchildren, Corey and Ava Phillips. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Cancer Society, Crossroads Community Hospice, Diabetes Assoc. or donors choice.
