Fred passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Home, one day after celebrating his 93rd birthday.
Frederic Leroy Schaub was born on January 20, 1921 to Adolph and Alma (Cross) Schaub, in Cerro Gordo County, IA. The family soon moved to Albert Lea, where Fred attended school. After his schooling, Fred went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps. As soon as he could, Fred enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his service, Fred served as a machine gunner at Midway Island and Guadalcanal during World War II. After his honorable discharge from the military, Fred was united in marriage to Dorothy Hill on April 28, 1945. To this union, four children were born: Marc, Cameron, Kendra, and Corey.
Fred was an active member of Round Prairie Lutheran Church. He was also in organizations such as the American Legion, VFW, National Association of Retired Federal Workers, and the Senior Center. Fred enjoyed gardening, collecting coins, cameras and knives. He was active all of his life, even riding bicycle races with his granddaughter when he was 71 years old. He was an avid gun collector, having one of the most complete Mauser handgun collections in the area. Fred was famous for his twists, turns and jumps on the roller skating and ice skating rink, his well-tuned whistling, and his distinguished mustache and hat.
Fred was known as a hardworking, strict German who always had the knack of knowing what was best for his family. He was friendly, outgoing, social, and very dedicated to whatever he set his mind on. In his later years, Fred volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center at the age of 88, to "help the elderly." His unique sense of humor was never lacking, either.
Fred is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; granddaughter, Ashley Schaub; parents, Adolph and Alma; as well as three sisters.
Fred is survived by his children, Marc (Susan) Schaub, of Glenville, MN, Cameron (Lisa) Schaub, of Rogers, MN, Kendra Schaub, of Glenville, MN and Corey Schaub, of Winona, MN; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends.
