Obituary for Duane Edward Johnson



Memorial service for Duane Edward Johnson will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 21, 2004, at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, MN. The Reverend Reggie Klindworth will officiate. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Bonnerup Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.



Duane died at his home on Sunday, February 15, 2004. He was 81 years old.



Duane was born in Swede Grove Township, MN on September 24, 1922, the son of Arthur J. and Helen E. (Anderson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at The Swedish Lutheran Church in Grove City, MN. He was a 1939 graduate of Grove City High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. During WWII he served with the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 as an electronics technician on the USS Hammann in the North Atlantic. He also taught electronics at the Navy Pier in Chicago.



On August 27, 1949, Duane was united in marriage with Joyce R. Schellbach in Nashwauk, MN. In 1952 they moved to Albert Lea where Duane worked as an engineer for the Interstate Power Company. He retired in 1987. For the last 11 years they spent winters at their home at TIP-O-Texas RV resort in Pharr, TX.



Duane was an active member of First Lutheran Church and had served as a past President of the congregation, ushered, taught Bethel Bible Study and Sunday School. He was active in the Albert Lea Jaycees, Elks, and Golden K. Kiwanis.



Duane and Joyce loved music, and loved to dance. Along with five other couples, they started the Stardusters Dance Club in 1953, which they enjoyed for 20 years. Duane also enjoyed golfing, sporting events, and working puzzles of all kinds. He was an avid computer enthusiast, which allowed him to stay in contact with his family and friends. He was very proud of his family and treasured time spent with them.



Duane is survived by his wife, Joyce of Albert Lea, MN; five children: Dean (Mary) Johnson of Georgetown TX, Bruce (Marybeth) Johnson of Eden Prairie, MN, Gail Drommerhausen of Blaine, MN, Kent (Christine) Johnson of Burnsville, MN, Jane (Jon) Kallberg of Lutsen, MN; five grandsons, Grant Johnson of Georgetown, TX, Gregory (Sarah) Johnson of Nacogdoches, TX, Daniel Johnson of Eden Prairie, MN, Curtis and Jeff Drommerhausen of Blaine, MN; one brother, Wendell (Joyce) Johnson of Toledo, OH; nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents and nephews.
